A staff member has died after taking ill at Fife College’s Dunfermline City Campus, with all staff and students sent home for the day.
Emergency services were called to the site around 11.10am after being made aware of a medical emergency.
A 65-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. Support is being offered to students and employees impacted by the sudden death.
In a statement released earlier, a spokesperson for Fife College said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our colleages has passed away today at our Dunfermline Campus.
“Our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues at this extrememely difficuly time. Support is being made available to staff and students affected.
“We can confirm this is not a public health issue.”
There had been speculation on social media that the emergency response and college closure had been linked to the ongoing meningitis outbreak in the South of England.
A spokesperson for the Scottish Ambulance Service said crews were called to an incident at the college on Friday morning: “We dispatched an ambulance, critical care paramedic and a rapid resuscitation response unit to the scene.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 11.10am on Friday 20th March we were made aware of a medical matter at a college in Dunfermline. Emergency services attended, however a 65-year-old man was pronounced dead a short time later. There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”
