Bollards are to be installed to restrict public parking in Cowdenbeath’s town centre Green Square on the High Street after years of illegal parking.
Cllr Darren Watt updated members of Cowdenbeath Community Council at their meeting on Thursday 19th February, that Fife Council’s Roads & Transportation service had confirmed the installation will happen shortly.
Cars, vans and motorbikes have been using the Green Square as a unofficial car park for years, without intervention from parking enforcement officers.
The Council have now confirmed the area is not to be used for public parking and that enforcement activity will now commence. Temporary bollards, which can be opened during community events in the Square, will be installed on the edge of the pathway so vehicles cannot gain regular access to the pedestrian area.
There was relief among community councillors when the news was confirmed, as vehicles illegally parking on the Square have been a regular source of frustration for locals, with complaints raised to both the community council and elected members.
It’s hoped the move will improve safety for pedestrians using the area and reduce the nuisance of illegal parking in this area of the town centre.
Cowdenbeath has over 500 free parking spaces spread across the town, one of the last remaining large towns with free parking charges in Fife.
