Cowdenbeath’s last remaining Co-op food store is to close in February, ending 150 years of retail connection with the town.
The Dalbeath Crescent store has announced it will close on 28th February 2026. It is understood the property will become a Premier convenience store at some point in the future.
The staff affected have been informed, and we understand some will transfer to other Co-op stores while others may be employed by Premier.
The store is a popular and busy stop for locals and has been operating from Dalbeath Crescent since the mid-1990’s after taking over from the David Sands chain.
The closure will mark the end of a long history of Co-op retail stores in Cowdenbeath spanning more than 150 years, with Cowdenbeath Co-operative Society establishing a large footprint in the town from 1875.

The group now have just one High Street business left at Co-op Funeralcare, having reduced from a huge presence in the town, including bakers, a butchers, a grocers, a furniture store, clothing department, shoe department and drapery among others, taking up several buildings around the Fountain area of the town centre.
Their prominent buildings, where the Council offices and Police Station now sit, suffered a devastating fire in September 1963, when 50 employees escaped an inferno, with the fire destroying the section where the modern Brunton House now stands.
Co-operative Group and Premier Stores have been approached for comment.
