Street lights in Cowdenbeath High Street have been fitted with new safety cables as a precaution after a lamp dropped off onto a busy crossing.
The lamp outside the Post Office dropped from the lamp post back in October 2024, smahing onto the pavement around 25ft below. There are thought to be no injuries.
Now, Fife Council have installed ‘catenary wires’ to prevent any further failures, before the lights are replaced in the longer term.
Local development group, My Cowdenbeath, raised the matter with local elected members in October and the Council’s Roads & Transportation Service have now installed the new safety wires on the lamps along the entire length of the busy High Street.
Service Manager, Bill Liddle, said:
“An inspection in November found the lights to be in satisfactory working order but we took the opportunity to install catenary wires to further secure them as a failsafe and avoid any future falling lamps. While there is no risk to the public, we do plan to replace the lights in the longer term.”

A spokesperson for My Cowdenbeath said, “We are grateful to the Council for moving swiftly to inspect and then fit these devices to give greater reassurance for pedestrians and motorists using the High Street. We understand the lights are more than 25 years old and hope the ageing equipment can be replaced in any future town centre improvements.”
