Water from a burst main in Cowdenbeath has been spraying more than 40feet into the air across a busy railway line.

Scottish Water confirmed they had been contacted about the incident just after 8.30am this morning, located just behind Glenfarg Crescent, which is still throwing thousands of gallons on water into the air.

Water has been pouring across the tracks and down into the nearby shops and car park at Lidl and the B&M Garden Centre. With freezing temperatures over the last 7 days of up to -6C and a weather warning issued for this weekend, ice is likely in the affected areas.

In a statement, Scottish Water said: “We have located a burst water main in a field behind Cowdenbeath High Street and our team is on-site. No traffic management will be required. An estimated repair time will be provided once the repair is underway.”

ScotRail have said trains in and out of Cowdenbeath station remain unaffected and trains were seen passing the incident with caution this afternoon.

Several Scottish Water vans and third party engineering companies were at the site of the burst main earlier. The burst is trackside, located to the east of the Fife Circle railway line, in a patch of green space behind the houses.

Although they advised that no domestic customers were likely to be affected by the leak, Scottish Water do advise anyone who may be vulnerable or need additional support with water supplies to contact them on 0800 0778 778.

Network Rail Scotland have been contacted for comment.
